The community garden project has been running since August 2009. Through community engagement, participation feedback and trial and error, we have grown into our current position as a successful and busy service offered to communities throughout the Fitzroy Valley. We started with a blank canvas and a small grant from Healthways for tools and materials. We bought the equipment needed to start developing the grounds and began talking to the communities about what they would like us to offer.
The community garden is open to the community to come and participate, share and learn about gardening. We offer workshops to local service providers and community members to learn about the types of fruit and vegetables which grow throughout the year, we show participants different methods for growing fruit and vegetables in a sustainable and chemical free way and we showcase different styles and types of gardening models and techniques. The garden is also used as a training ground, with CDEP participants and to conduct some traineeships.
